With the pandemic that took the world by storm last year, most of us realised that there are only so many hours a day you can spend watching TV.
Eventually, you’re going to get bored. And few things are as frustrating as being bored. So, many people tried their hand at new things – exercising, cooking, and even art.
This has led to a lot of people discovering how therapeutic art can be. Even if the result isn’t a masterpiece, you’ll have spent your time creating something. Plus, art can be loads of fun! We’ll be guiding you through a few fun art projects to do when you find yourself with a little extra time on your hands.
Graffiti
Graffiti gets a bad rep a lot of the time, but the truth is that it’s a very bold art form that is capable of expressing thoughts and feelings in unique ways.
As long as it’s done legally, it can be one of the most fun experiences you do all year, especially when you do it with loved ones. Grab some graffiti paint and let your wild side out.
Crayon melting
You’ve probably seen some form of art where crayons are melted over a canvas to create beautiful works of art and thought to yourself, ‘How on earth do people do that?’.
The truth is that, while it may look intricate and like something only a professional artist can achieve, you can quite easily mimic the results with a few staple items.
Simply glue your crayons onto a canvas, and then grab a hairdryer to encourage the crayons to melt. You can stop here, or turn and move the canvas to encourage the melted wax to flow in different directions. Be sure to do this quickly, before the wax hardens. You can also decide to go for the traditional rainbow, or be more adventurous and try different color combinations.
Sculpting
Look, becoming a professional sculptor takes a lot of time. Don’t be disappointed if you end up with nothing more than a blob the first few times you try sculpting.
That being said, it is one of the most fun art experiences you can have, as long as you don’t get frustrated with the imperfections of it. Oh, and it’s messy. Very messy – but that only adds to the fun!
Tie-dye
As with most fashion trends, tie-dye went out of fashion for a while before coming back with a bang – and it’s bigger than ever before. Tie-dyeing your clothes is a fun way of creating some new-looking outfits without having to buy new clothes – it’s a win-win! You can tie-dye blankets and most types of clothes.
It’s also a great way to recycle old jeans. You can use fabric dye to create rainbow or colored effects, or simply use bleach on darker clothes to create a reverse tie-dye look.
Splatter paint
If you want to get a cathartic release of your emotions while also creating a unique work of art, splatter paint is the option for you. As the method suggests, you simply grab a few paintbrushes, dip them in paint, and splatter them all over the canvas of your choice.
You’ll end up with a bright, multi-layered art piece that looks like an explosion of emotions. Click here to see some splatter paintings for sale – you might just feel inspired.
Balloon popping
This is another messy one, and it’s similar to splatter paint in the sense that you don’t have that much control over how the final artwork looks.
You’re going to need a wall, white cloth or canvas, paint, balloons, and darts. Start by covering the wall with your cloth or canvas, and then sticking paint-filled balloons onto them. Stand far away and try to hit the balloons with your darts.
Be sure to cover the floor with plastic so that you don’t get paint all over it, and to wear old clothes since you’ll likely get a lot of paint splashing onto you.
Paint by numbers
For the less adventurous souls who are looking for a peaceful, mess-free way of creating art, why not try your hand at painting by numbers? If you’re not a natural artist, this is the perfect solution.
It doesn’t require much talent, but it does give you a creative outlet and still offers you the relaxing benefits that other art forms have to offer. This is a fun project that can last you a while, and the sense of accomplishment you feel when you’re finally done will be worth the long hours.
