A happy home environment is essential to your well-being. It is our sanctuary for us to unwind, relax and enjoy. Make your home the best it can be even on a budget with a little DIY inspiration.
There’s no denying accent walls are having a moment right now. Interior Designers and Decorators everywhere are showing off gorgeous walls on social media and throughout magazines. However, these walls can end up being pretty pricey so read on to see how you can get the look for less!
1. DIY it
Many people don’t realise how easy it is to decorate their own homes. Save your dollars by leaving the decorators out of it and put up your own paper or wooden wall paneling. Pre-backed papers are a great option for temporary fixes as they can be removed easily. Wood paneling offers a super stylish look to your walls that can be stuck on yourself without the need for a professional!
2. Make the most of what you have
Do you have a built-in fireplace? Then you’ve already got an accent wall! Decorate around it or add objects of interest to the mantelpiece. If you know you have solid brick behind the plaster then expose it!
Brick is incredibly on-trend so you’ll be the envy of any house guests. There will be something in your room that makes it unique so base your accent wall on what stands out naturally.
3. A little lick of paint
Paint can do wonders to brighten up a room. There are tons of affordable paint companies out there to choose from. Rather than just painting the wall a different colour from the rest, why not try painting in stripes or geometric patterns? If you’re a painting novice, don’t be afraid – it’s super as easy so long as you take care to prepare the room correctly.
If it’s old and already painted, fill in any existing holes or cracks and sand down the wall to give you a smooth surface as a base. Ensure you wash and dry the walls, so they are free of dust and grime, and then get painting!
4. Shelve it
If you want to add some interest to your wall without any redecorating, adorn it with some shelving! Practical and stylish, you’ll be able to use them for storage whilst displaying some of your most charming possessions. Add some plants to the shelves for a touch of greenery and breathe some life into your space.
Pick up some budget shelves that you can easily put up yourself or turn your hand to making your own! Super easy to create, just make sure the surface sits level once they’re on the wall.
5. Photo wall
A quick and easy way to create a feature wall is by adding some decoration. Put up 15-20 photos of your happiest memories across the wall to make it stand out.
A great bonus is that it will make you smile every time you see it! If photos aren’t your thing, pick some motivational quotes and house them in bold frames. You can pick up old frames from second-hand stores or eBay and repaint them however you like!
