The tiny house movement has taken the world by storm. Social media has posts all the time with beautiful pictures of cozy little spaces that are usually out in nature in an amazing setting. It’s very easy to get swayed and decide to get your very own tiny house.
Although tiny houses are an excellent idea for both their comfortable atmosphere and the low cost to live in one, they are a challenge to furnish. It isn’t easy to downsize and be able to live in the space comfortably. In this article, we will go over some of the ideas that many tiny house owners use to maximize their space.
1 – Get the right furniture
It is obvious that the furniture needs to be small so sofas for small spaces are a good first step. It really all depends on the space. In some cases, a small sofa is enough if you have the space for storage in other areas. It is a good idea to go for multipurpose furniture that also has some storage within it.
For instance, a sofa with drawers underneath or even inside of it is going to work best in an ultra-small space. An ottoman that opens up to reveal a storage compartment inside it adds comfort as well as function.
A dresser is something that may or may not work depending on the space. Yes, its function is for storage, but it does take up a lot of floor space so it isn’t always the best option for a tiny house. When floor space is at a minimum then you may need to go with some shelves or cubbies to store clothes. If you do have a sofa that has storage then use that for your clothes instead.
2 – Look up
Floor space is at a minimum so it is best to get as much off of it as possible so you have plenty of space to walk around. The thing to realize is that you have three dimensions to work with and not just one. Use the walls and even the ceiling for furnishing the house.
Shelving is a good start so you can get things off of the ground. Rather than a dresser, use a shelf for clothes. Also, you can use the shelves for storage of a lot of kitchen appliances or other needs for cooking rather than in a huge set of cabinets.
Rather than use a regular table, look to use the wall to mount a drop table that collapses and folds back so it is essentially flush with the wall. Then open it as you need it.
The ceiling can also be used for storage by adding some slidable containers held up on rails.
3 – Benches and bars
You can really maximize your space by using benches or bars for seating and eating. A bar is a great way to make use of limited space instead of having a table. And it can do double duty as a workspace when you’re not eating.
Benches are more narrow than a sofa and can make your seating much more efficient. They usually also feature compartments underneath to fully use your storage space.
